Space Marines WIP2

Picking up from last post where both armour and bases were based with a single layer (Macragge Blue and Scorched Brown, respectively).. Since then quite a bit has happened :D

First the armour plates were washed with Drakenhof Nightshade for shading effects. Secondly, the bases were finished with successive layers of drybrushing (Calthan Brown followed by Bleached Bone).

I've also finished the guns which I'm painting separately until the final highlighting. Metal areas are painting with Leadbelcher and gunstraps with Scorched Brown. All elements are then washed individually (blue, black and brown).

To paint the larger gold elements (chest sigil and shoulder rims) I've followed the advice of Ron on http://fromthewarp.blogspot.dk/ and based with a light warm brown (Calthan Brown) before painting Shining Gold on top. This allows for a single thin application of the metal paint, which leaves a smoother finish.

Finally, I've started on the remaining smaller elements such as belt and pouch (Calthan Brown, washed with Devlan Mud), grenades (Warboss Green washed with Badab Black) and purity seals (Bleached Bone washed with Devlan Mud)

Now all I'm missing is the remaining small outside elements and then some line highlights to make everything stand out a bit more... To be continued :D

WIP Space Marine Tactical Squad

As mentioned in my previous post the paints for my Assault on Black Reach has finally arrived so its time to get cracking on my Ultramarines! First up is the 10 man (inc. one Sergeant) tactical squad...

Following the advice of the very talented Ron Ronsaikowski (FromTheWarp - really, check it out) I've decided to start painting inside out. This means that small recessed details (in this case eyes and flex-joints) are painted first.. This enables easy clean-up if mistakes are made... Below is half the squad with these details painted...

Next step is painting the base colour of the armour, a few thin layers of Macragge Blue, which creates a nice smooth surface...

Once all the dudes are painted its time to drybrush the bases and the continue to work on the details while also painting the guns...

The Hounds are done!

After layers and layers of dry-brushing of both fur, bases and horns I could finally last night glue static grass on my hounds and call it done... Compared to my previous group of Chaos Warriors it's quite different to paint animals, but I really enjoyed it as it has really allowed me to play with dry-brushing and more "organic" miniatures...
All in all I'm quite happy with the result, and as the painting goods are clearly with me my paints for my Space Marines (and Orcs) arrived yesterday, so expect an update on my next project fairly soon :D

Its Chaos time!

Finally gotten my awesome looking Chaos Warriors based and they are now as close to finished as I will get them for now :D Considering they are my first real paint-project I'm actually quite proud...

Many thanks to Lauren for taking these really nice shots... Next project is my ongoing Khorne Lord on Juggernaut as well as a pack of Chaos Warhounds... For now, here's the current state of my the Juggernaut

Chaos Warriors, part II

Finally I've also had time to paint the last of my Chaos Warriors and give them a wash which has REALLY helped bring out the details...

(the top picture show the figures before washing for comparison)

As all 12 are now finally done, it's time to add the last finishing touch, highlights... I've already started on a selected few figures, but the technique (line highlights) is new to me and will require a bit of practice before the models are presentable...

P.s. Something the guides don't mention; washes stinks! So be sure to paint the miniatures somewhere well-ventilated:P

Chaos Hounds, back in black

I've also finally had some time to get started on my Chaos Hounds, which have all been prepped, glued and filled with liquid Green Stuff

These have also been primed with my Chaos Black spray paint and are now ready for further treatment...

Big Bucks

So a few months has passed since my last post, and quite a lot has happened in the meantime. Most importantly, my Phd-thesis is finally done and handed in, giving me back some precious spare time in which I can continue my painting...

I'll make a few different posts concerning the progress of my various projects, but thought I wanted to start of with a new one..

During my last visit to England I picked up to large and wonderful "Assault on Black Reach" Warhammer 40.000 starter pack!

This beauty contains a handy rulebook, dice and rulers etc and most importantly more than 40 miniatures split between two forces; Space Marines and Orks. While assembling and painting the entire set is going to take a LONG time, I've already played a few simple games with the unfinished models which I enjoyed very much.

As the squad of Tactical Space Marines are some of the most iconic Warhammer 40k miniatures, I decided to start with them.

After preparation and gluing, the 10 Space Marines are spray coated with Chaos Black to prime the figures.

In parallel with the tactical squad I have started on the 20 Ork Boyz, prepping and gluing as I go along...

I have yet to decide on the Chapter (and hence colour) of the Space Marines, and will properly put this project on hold when the Orks are done and finish up some of my other projects first...
